Feb 2007: Clifford I. Uyeda Peace and Humanitarian Award. Recipient: Founding Executive Director, Samina Faheem Sundas
About the award: The Clifford I. Uyeda Peace and Humanitarian award was established three years ago by the Bay Area Day of Remembrance Consortium, to remember the legacy of the late Clifford I. Uyeda, a longtime civil rights and human rights leader whose life championed the civil and human rights of Japanese Americans, Chinese Americans, and others.
As the president of the National Japanese American Citizens League during the 1980s, Uyeda provided critical leadership in campaign to educate the nation about the World War II internment of over 120,000 persons of Japanese Americans; and worked for an official apology and the passage of redress and reparations bills in Congress.
He was a co-founder and co-chair of the Rape of Nanking Redress Coalition and continued to do education and advocacy on this and other issues throughout his life. The first recipient of the Award was Congressman Mike Honda in 2005; the second, Art Shibayama, Japanese Latin American redress activist, in 2006.

About the award: Jefferson Awards recognizes "unsung heroes" for community service. Jefferson Award for making a difference in his or her community are administered by the American Institute for Public Service, a national foundation that honors community service. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis co-founded the Jefferson Awards in 1972 with then-U.S. Sen. Robert Taft Jr. and former Robert Kennedy staffer Sam Beard.

About the award: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Award was established by FOR in 1979 to recognize unheralded persons or groups working in the United States in the tradition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was very involved with FOR, and was serving as a member of FOR's Advisory Council at the time of his death. The award honors those who make a significant contribution to the furtherance of Dr. King’s nonviolent approach to transforming racial, economic, and social injustice.
