AMV Executive Director receives Clifford I. Uyeda Peace & Humanitarian Award
On February 17, 2007, Samina F. Sundas, executive director of American Muslim Voice, received the Clifford I. Uyeda Peace and Humanitarian Award. The Bay Area Day of Remembrance Consortium presented the award to her at its annual commemoration of the World War II internment of Japanese Americans - its lessons and legacy, especially in the current post-9/11 era -- as America finds itself in the midst of another war.
Sixty-five years ago, on February 19, 1942, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, setting into motion the exclusion, removal, detainment and incarceration of over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II.
Latino Community recognizes the AMV and Khalid Saeed
In May 2007, American Muslim Voice was recognized by the Latino Community Council for promoting cultural inclusion and understanding. Accepting the award was founding national director Samina Sundas.
Also recognized was the AMV’s National President, Khalid Saeed, for his being a "strong voice for the voiceless in Yolo County. A resident of the county since 1974, Khalid Saeed has long been an active supporter of the Islamic Center of Woodland. He has served on the board of the Celebration of Abraham Committee. He is also a member of the Sacramento American Civil Liberties Union.
AMV Executive Director was one of 100 Diverse Dreamers for “Dream Across America Tour”
The American Muslim Voice Executive Director, Samina Faheem Sundas, was honored to be one of the 100 Diverse Dreamers for "Dream Across America Tour" that will leave for Washington DC by train. In eight days (June 13-20, 2007) via ten cities, the tour brought together one hundred diverse individuals from throughout the country referred to as Dreamers. These Dreamers shared their compelling stories and reinforce what still holds true today - no matter their backgrounds, immigrant or native born, they all cherished the values that make this country prosper.
AMV Executive Director is honored with Jefferson Award
In July 2007, Samina Faheem Sundas, Executive Director of the American Muslim Voice was honored as a recipient of the Jefferson Awards, which recognizes "unsung heroes" for community service. Jefferson Award for making a difference in his or her community are administered by the American Institute for Public Service, a national foundation that honors community service. Sundas was nominated for her tireless work to promote understanding cross-culturally and will be invited to a January banquet with the other Bay Area recipients. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis co-founded the Jefferson Awards in 1972 with then-U.S. Sen. Robert Taft Jr. and former Robert Kennedy staffer Sam Beard.
AMV President holds “Learning about Islam” classes at Woodland Ecumenical Ministries
In July 2007, Khalid Saeed, national president of American Muslim Voice, volunteered to conduct a series of four classes on “Learning about Islam” at Woodland United Methodist Church 212 North Street, Woodland, CA.
The classes, the brainchild of Rev. Ardith Allread of United Methodist church, were open to the public and attracted people belonging to different churches.
Myths and Realities in a Nation of Immigrants
On July 2, 2007, American Muslim Voice along with KQED, Multifaith Voices for Peace and Justice, Peninsula Peace and Justice Center and Global Peace Partners, sponsored a forum titled: Myths and Realities in a Nation of Immigrants
The program, First United Methodist Church, Palo Alto, CA , included stories of immigrants, information on why people come to the United States, legislative updates on the DREAM Act and Immigration Reform. The event also featured a screening of clips from KQED’s original production “Immigration Calculations.”
Dialogue at Santa Clara County
On July 19, 2007 AMV Executive Director, Samina Faheem Sundas, participated in a board dialogue between youth and adults as a Human Relations Commissioner for Santa Clara County.
Peace Picnic in Fremont, CA
On July 21, 2007, American Muslim Voice sponsored a peace picnic, at the Elizabeth Lake in Fremont, CA., to promote peace and harmony. The picnic attracted about 200 activists from various faiths, ethnic and civil rights groups. About two dozen groups and organizations co-sponsored the event.
Peace enthusiasts came from near and far including: Fremont, Newark, Union City, Hayward, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, Santa Clara, Mountain view, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Menlo Park, Daily City, San Francisco, Emeriville, Oakland, Berkeley, Roseville and DC.
Candlelight vigil 9/11
On Sept. 11 of this year, the AMV organized a candlelight vigil to commemorate the 6th anniversary of 9/11 which coincided with the start of the Muslim holy month, Ramadan.
Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Prize
On Sept 16, 2007, Samina Faheem Sundas, Executive Director of the American Muslim Voice, and her organization received (the Fellowship of Reconciliation) FOR's Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Prize for their work to bridge the gap between communities and unite us all under the umbrella of our common humanity.
The award was presented at its third annual Festival of Peace held at FOR’s national headquarters in Upper Nyack, New York.
